Epson Dot Matrix Printer Printing Print Head Problems - Causes & Repair Guide
Epson Dot Matrix Printer Printout Looks Bad? Causes & Repair Guide
An Epson dot matrix printer can continue working for many years, but printing quality may gradually become poor. You may notice faded characters, broken dots, uneven darkness, double images, missing lines or unclear multipart forms.
This does not always mean the ribbon needs to be replaced. In many cases, the actual problem is related to the print head, platen, ribbon mechanism, paper feeding or print head gap.
Why Does an Epson Dot Matrix Printer Print Badly?
1. Printout is too light or uneven
Possible causes:
A worn ribbon, incorrect ribbon installation, weak print head pins or excessive mechanical wear.
Solution:
Check the ribbon first and replace it if necessary. If the new ribbon does not improve the printout, the print head and print mechanism should be inspected.
2. Characters have missing dots or broken lines
Possible causes:
Some print head pins may be worn, damaged or not striking the paper correctly.
Solution:
Test the printer with a known-good ribbon and inspect the print head. If missing dots remain consistently in the same position, professional print head inspection or replacement may be required.
3. Text looks doubled or vertical lines are not straight
Possible causes:
Print head alignment, mechanical wear, platen condition or paper movement problems can cause characters to appear misaligned.
Solution:
Check the print head positioning and mechanical alignment. The tractor feed and platen should also be inspected, especially on older machines.
4. Multipart forms are not clear
This is a common problem when using an Epson dot matrix printer for invoices, delivery orders, continuous forms and multipart documents.
Possible causes:
The print head may not be producing enough impact, the ribbon may be worn, the platen may have deteriorated, or the paper thickness/gap may not be correctly set.
Solution:
Check the ribbon, print head impact, platen and print head gap according to the paper being used. Simply changing the ribbon may not solve the problem.
5. Paper feeds correctly but the printing position keeps moving
Possible causes:
Worn tractor-feed components, paper slipping, platen wear or incorrect paper positioning.
Solution:
Inspect the tractor mechanism, paper path and platen. For continuous forms, correct paper positioning is particularly important because even a small feeding problem can make the printed lines appear uneven.

Don't Replace the Printer Too Quickly
An old Epson dot matrix printer can often be repaired when the printout becomes poor.
The correct approach is to identify which component is causing the printing problem before replacing parts.
At JK OFFICE SERVICE & SUPPLIES, we diagnose the actual printing fault and check the ribbon, print head, platen, paper feeding, tractor mechanism and mechanical alignment before recommending repair.
